Activities by Focus Areas

Recreation and Social Competency
Try some of the following activities if you and your Little are working on areas like self-esteem, social skills, opening up, or experiencing new things and simply having fun together. Many of these are also great activities for quiet Littles!
 
Get a disposable camera for you and your Little- agree that both of you will take pictures of your surroundings- family, friends, neighborhood, favorite things. A few weeks later, develop the pictures and share with each other!
Play a board game
Make a collage together
Go to a sporting event
Let your Little teach you something
Work out, swim, walk, play basketball, or try a class at any Middle Tennessee YMCA
Go bowling
Develop a hobby together (Fantasy Football, chess, scrapbooking)
Go the library and check out books
Learn a sport
Go to a movie and discuss the movie after
Attend one of your Little’s extracurricular activities
Go fishing

Education and Life Skills
If you and your Little are looking to incorporate education and learning into your outings- while still having fun- try some of these ideas. By being a positive example, you will teach your Little valuable lessons and life skills.

Teach your Little about measurements and fractions while baking cookies
Play an educational board game- (State Capital Sequence, Monopoly, Scrabble)
Teach your Little about statistics by following your favorite sports team
Study for the first 15 minutes of your outings
Teach your Little about budgeting by having a monthly budget for outings
Learn to cook together
Teach your Little how to ride the bus
Go to College Connections with your Little and learn about financial aid for higher education
Show your Little how to call Homework Hotline
Get some fun math worksheets from your Match Support Specialist!
Take tours of local colleges
Teach your Little how to change a tire

Help your Little experience the arts and learn about different cultures. Try some of the activities below!

Visit Cheekwood Botanical Gardens
Make homemade “thank you” cards
Visit the Frist Art Museum
Enjoy hot chocolate and play a game at a local coffee shop
Tour the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum
Visit the Hartzler-Towner Multicultural Museum that has over 10,000 artifacts from around the world
View local and regional art by predominately African American artists at In The Gallery on Jefferson
Street
See a puppet show at the Nashville Public Library
View student art for free at Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery

Community Engagement
Teach your Little about the importance of giving back and being an active participant in the community by doing some of these activities.

Volunteer with BBBS at Second Harvest Food Bank
Take your Little with you to vote
Find a place to volunteer through Hands On Nashville
Walk dogs at local animal shelters
Recycle together
Join BBBS at local events to pass out information (look in the Big Bulletin for opportunities)
Learn about community leaders together
Join Mayor Karl Dean and walk 100 miles of local parks and greenways (www.walk100miles.com)
Attend a "C" BBBS event!

 

Health and Well-being
If you and your Little are focusing on being healthy together, check out the following ideas. You can also stop by Big Brothers Big Sisters and pick up a guide specifically for mentors, “Eat Well, Stay Active, Have Fun.” The book is full of information on eating and living healthy and has some great ideas- like how to start a Water Savings Account!

Plant a vegetable garden

Go for walks at different parks around Nashville
Learn a new sport together
